Frequently Asked Questions

How do I see how many Lookups I have left?

You’ll find a usage counter embedded on the Location Lookup Tool’s results page. It displays how many lookups are included with your plan and how many you have remaining for the current month. The counter resets automatically on the 1st of each month — so if you're running low on lookups near the end of the month, no worries! Your usage will refresh at the start of the next month.

Running low on Lookups each month? Here's how to upgrade your plan.

If you’re consistently running out of lookups, it might be time to switch to a plan that better fits your needs.

On the Basic plan? You can upgrade anytime by visiting your Profile page in the app. Click “Manage Subscriptions” to access your billing portal, where you can update your payment info or switch from Basic to Premium.

Already on Premium and still hitting your limit? Reach out to us! Someone from our team can work with you on a custom quote for an Enterprise plan with higher lookup volumes — and help you explore whether API integration makes sense for your usage.

We’re always happy to help you find the right setup.

How do I access the API so I can automate this process?

Interested in connecting to our API so you don’t have to search each shipment manually? You’re in luck! With Shiplify’s API, you can pull the same data shown in the Location Lookup Tool directly into your own systems — whether it’s an e-commerce platform, transportation management system (TMS), or internal operations workflow.

To get started with API access or learn more about how it could work for your team, reach out to us. Our team will walk you through the options and help set up the right plan based on your volume and integration needs.

Does Shiplify integrate with my TMS provider?

We’re actively building partnerships with TMS platforms, and we’re happy to explore an integration with yours. If you’d like to see Shiplify data embedded directly in your TMS, the best first step is to connect us with your provider. We’ll handle the conversation and work toward getting our data built into their system by getting them to connect to our API.

The more interest your TMS sees from their users, the more likely they are to prioritize the integration — so letting them know it’s important to you can help move things forward.

What are the differences between Location Types, Tariff Items, and Location Attributes?

Shiplify provides three layers of insight into the locations you search: Location Types, Tariff Items, and Location Attributes. Each plays a distinct role in helping you understand how a location may be billed and operated.

Location Types are Shiplify’s most granular categorization, describing the specific type of property identified — such as a place of worship, school, military base, and more. This classification helps paint a more detailed picture of the site beyond just a generic access level.

Tariff Items represent how carriers typically bill for those types of addresses. For example, a school or church will typically map to the Limited Access (LIM) tariff, while a residence would map to Residential (RES). These mappings are based on the Location Type and vary by carrier:

  • Some carriers apply generic tariff codes.
  • Others use carrier-specific, proprietary codes.

You can view both generic and carrier-specific tariff mappings within the Location Lookup Tool by selecting individual carriers from the dropdown menu. This ensures you understand both how Shiplify categorizes the address and how your carriers are likely to treat it from a billing perspective.

Location Attributes describe the physical features of the property — specifically whether it has a loading dock and/or a forklift. While these attributes aren’t directly tied to tariff codes, they significantly impact delivery logistics and fees, especially when it comes to liftgate requirements:

  • If a location does not have a dock or a forklift, carriers typically apply a liftgate fee to ensure the freight can be unloaded.
  • If a location does have either a dock or a forklift, that information can often be used to avoid, reduce, or dispute those charges — since the equipment necessary to unload freight is available.

Providing all three layers — Location Types, Tariff Items, and Location Attributes — allows you to see not just how a location is classified, but how that classification may affect your operational planning and billing outcomes.

What should I do if I notice incorrect data in the Location Lookup Tool?

If you come across a location that looks off, just use the “Flag” feature to leave a comment. This helps our team quickly identify and correct discrepancies. Shiplify takes pride in delivering accurate, reliable data — and we appreciate your help in keeping it that way.

How can I use the Shiplify location lookup tool to dispute charges?

If you’re hit with an unexpected accessorial, use Shiplify to look up the address in question. For example, if you receive a limited access charge but Shiplify returns the location as commercial, you can use that to support your dispute. Likewise, if you get a liftgate charge and Shiplify marks the address as having dock or forklift access, that’s valuable documentation to bring to your carrier. Our data is trusted by many carriers and can help strengthen your case.

How can I use the Shiplify location lookup tool to get ahead of accessorial fees?

Use Shiplify’s location lookup tool to check addresses before booking a shipment to flag residential, limited access, or liftgate needs in advance. This helps you avoid surprise charges, ensure proper equipment is used, and accurately quote your end customer with accessorials baked in. It also streamlines billing by preventing disputes after the fact. If you’re comparing carriers, Shiplify can highlight which ones are more likely to apply fees based on their rules tariffs—giving you more control over cost and carrier selection.

How can I add, remove, edit, and manage users on Shiplify’s platform?

You can add unlimited users under your subscription. Just go to the Users page in the dropdown menu, click Add New User, and enter their email address. They’ll receive an invite from Shiplify Support to create their account. We offer permission tiers—Admin access for key account holders, Editor or Viewer access for those using the tool, and Developer access for technical team members.

What is the ‘Locations’ page, and how is it different from the Lookup tool?

The Locations page lets you view addresses you've previously looked up—making it easy to revisit past shipments without using additional searches. This helps you stay within your usage limits. Your search history is saved for up to 180 days, so you can quickly reference prior lookups anytime.

What are the API Docs? Why don’t I have access to the API keys within those docs

The API Docs provide detailed technical instructions for integrating with Shiplify’s API to automate data delivery. They’re available in the dropdown menu of the app and are designed so you can set up an integration independently—no need to contact us (unless you want to).

If you don’t see access to manage API keys, it may be due to your account tier. Enterprise accounts receive API access by default. If you're on a Basic plan and interested in upgrading or enabling API access, just email us at support@shiplify.com and we’ll get you connected with the right team.
